NHS NURSING CAREER PROGRESSION

Band 5 to Band 6: Build Evidence for the Role You Want Next

Promotion is easier to prepare for when you can show readiness, not just time served.

Use the job description and person specification to build a clear evidence bank around leadership, safe decision-making, communication, quality improvement, supporting colleagues and the responsibilities expected at Band 6.

WHAT PANELS NEED TO SEE

Six evidence areas to strengthen before you apply

01

Leadership in practice

Prepare examples of coordinating care, taking responsibility, influencing a shift or supporting colleagues rather than relying on job title alone.

02

Delegation and supervision

Show how you allocate work safely, check understanding, give feedback and escalate when competence or safety is a concern.

03

Governance and quality

Use real evidence from audit, incident learning, policy, quality improvement, risk management or service standards.

04

Communication under pressure

Prepare examples involving challenge, conflict, escalation, multidisciplinary working and difficult conversations.

05

Service improvement

Explain a problem you noticed, what you changed or contributed, and the impact on care, workflow or team practice.

06

Professional development

Link courses, projects, reflection and new responsibilities to the Band 6 role rather than listing training without context.

A PRACTICAL ROUTE

Move from “I am ready” to evidence a panel can assess

1

Choose the target role

Compare two or three real Band 6 vacancies and note the responsibilities and essential criteria that repeat.

2

Build an evidence bank

For each repeated criterion, write down one or two genuine examples with context, action, result and reflection.

3

Close the gaps

Identify missing experience you can reasonably develop now through projects, supervision, audit, teaching, improvement work or acting-up opportunities.

4

Tailor the application

Match your supporting statement to the exact vacancy and make the evidence easy for a shortlisting panel to find.

5

Practise at the right level

Rehearse answers that demonstrate judgement, leadership and accountability appropriate to the role rather than memorising generic scripts.

TURN PREPARATION INTO ACTION

Choose the support that matches where you are now

Use the lower-cost self-study option first or choose focused one-to-one support when an interview or application is already live.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Band 5 to Band 6 progression FAQs

Do I need to be acting up before applying for Band 6?

Not necessarily. Requirements vary by vacancy. Focus on the actual person specification and prepare genuine evidence that shows you can handle the responsibilities being assessed.

What if I keep getting shortlisted but not appointed?

Review the quality and level of your interview evidence. Strong Band 5 examples can still sound too operational if they do not show judgement, leadership, influence or wider responsibility.

What if I am not getting shortlisted?

Audit the supporting statement against every essential criterion. Make evidence explicit, role-specific and easy for the shortlisting panel to identify.

How early should I start preparing?

Start before the vacancy appears by building an evidence bank. When a real role opens, you can then tailor instead of trying to remember examples under deadline pressure.

Should I memorise interview answers?

Practise the structure and evidence, not a script. Panels can ask follow-up questions, so you need to understand your example and be able to adapt it accurately.

READY FOR THE NEXT BAND?

Turn your experience into evidence that fits the role

If you have a live Band 6 vacancy, bring the job description and person specification. Build the application and interview evidence around what the panel is actually assessing.
