NHS NURSING INTERVIEW SCENARIOS
Use a consistent safety-first framework so you can respond to unfamiliar nursing interview scenarios while staying within your role, local policy and the information given.

SAFETY-FIRST FRAMEWORK
What could cause harm now and what needs urgent attention?
State the first safe action you would take using the information provided.
Explain who you would involve and why, especially if the situation exceeds your competence or authority.
Include the patient, family, colleagues or MDT where relevant and show how you would keep communication structured.
Close with documentation, reassessment and any governance or learning action that follows.
SCENARIOS TO PRACTISE
Recognition, immediate safety, escalation, structured communication and reassessment.
Risk-based prioritisation, delegation, communication and review.
Stop harm, follow policy, escalate, document and contribute to learning.
Stay professional, address behaviour, protect safety and escalate when appropriate.
Prioritise essential care, use resources safely, escalate capacity concerns and communicate.
Protect patients, distinguish support from accountability and use appropriate reporting routes.
PRACTISE OUT LOUD
Build structured answers and an evidence bank across common healthcare interview themes.
Start Interview eLearning →Test how you respond under pressure and get focused feedback before the real interview.
Book Mock Interview →Use STAR for evidence questions and a safety-first framework for scenarios.
Read STAR Guide →SCENARIO FAQ
Answer only within the information and role described. Focus on assessment, safety, escalation and appropriate action rather than making unsupported assumptions.
Panels often want to hear your priorities and reasoning. Make safety, scope, escalation and communication explicit.
STAR is useful for past examples. Hypothetical scenarios usually need a decision framework that explains what you would assess, prioritise, do and escalate.
State the highest immediate risk first, explain why it comes first, then show safe delegation, communication and reassessment.
Senior-role scenarios may expect more leadership, coordination, governance, staff support and service-level thinking in addition to immediate clinical safety.
INTERVIEW SOON?
Reading answers is not the same as producing one under interview pressure. Use self-study to build the framework or a mock interview to test delivery.
